Now, at first. This it totally unsupported by VMware or Dell, even if the firmware I'm flashing the card with is from Dell's website. I'm basically trying to run a VSAN cluster on totally unsupported hardware like a lots of folks with homelabs. The firmware used is Dell's firmware. The H cards can be found on eBay for cheap and it's no wonder that it's quite popular among homelab users using ZFS builds based on OpenSolaris or Linux.

There are IR firmware and IT firmware. VMware vSphere 5. Here is a shot before and after…. Create a folder. I called mine Dell.

Then I went to Dell's website to get the firmware. In reality, there is another zip package with the exactly original firmware inside and which has all the necessary tools in it including the exact firmware file — the 6gbpsas.

Wipe the card completely otherwise sas2flsh do not recognize it as an LSI card so the sas2flsh commands don't work. One must use megarec command to do the work. This command wipes all except the hardware SAS address unique for each card which is good as you don't have to save it first to add it back later.

Optional If you want to put the BIOS back in place you can, but you don't have to if you're using the card just for the passthrough. But in my case I did not. You might do the same if you have an older board available. Pretty glad it worked for me and I managed to upgrade my cards which should get more performance and throughput for my homebrewed VSAN installation… As being said at the beginning, do at your own risk.

There is no official support for it from VMware or Dell. But with few precautions and with few hours of documentation through blogs and forums, it's quite easy at the end.

The H are quite cheap on eBay and some of those guides are also flashing H cards as well which is a card with the same LSI hardware chip apparently. Update: I have had one host which was taking a good 5 min to pass the boot sequence for the sas2flash when booting ESXi 6. So I followed this guide here from Dan Richardson to flash the card to the latest release 20 … but there were problems….

There is nothing wrong with this guide, but it basically flashes the IR firmware, not the IT firmware. But what the hell I thougt. The firmware I had was an IT firmware! I double checked during the boot… strange situation…. Oh well, what I done is that I erased the card again. The problem was that after full wipe with the commands at the beginning of the post:.

Then after erasing and trying different things again I have done this via UEFI and brought here another error:. Due to error remaining commands will not be executed. Unable to Process Commands.I just received a new shiny T I have a question about the Perc controller, as I am not able to find any details on other forums or the internet. I wish to connect an additional hard drive to one of these ports, but amy getting nowhere with this.

Windows does not detect the drive, nor list any storage controller being installed. I have downloaded and installed all the drivers. The SAS Raid Driver fails to install update package is not compatible with your system configuration. Am I to assume that the 'hardware' controller is there, but can't be used? Go to Solution. The driver for the PERC card has to be installed when windows gets installed. So you will need to reinstall windows and during the install when it is gathering drivers to use you will need to select that you have a raid card so that it will gather basic raid card drivers. Thank you for the suggestion, which I have tried, but still no storage controller listed in Device Manager? Perhaps Win7 includes the drivers for this SAS controller by default?

How do one make use of these additional ports on the motherboard?

Installing SSD in Dell Precision T3600

I have the same issue with a T here. Only ports 0 and 1 on the motherboard actually recognize connected devices.

I would like to hear a resolution to this as well. Check in the bios for the your sata ports. I take it that the ports are there, and should be usable, regardless of the drive or raid configuration option chosen during the purchase customization process on your website.

Cheers Leon Solved!Data and program cache could go into the 1TB storage drive instead. Anyway I thought the first suggestion was strange and I was pretty sure it should work although I had my reservation as there may be hardware conflicts in workstation systems.

So no issues here. I though it was going to be a quick painless installation and how wrong I was. Also bear in mind, you may not have the same issue I had but if you do then I hope this would help. I made sure it was properly formatted by going to the command prompt under repair disk — before installation. If for any reason you are unable to list disk and it shows no drive, I suspect it could be due to the RAID card. You could then repeat the steps above to create a partition align.

Installation should be straight forward from here. Just make sure you hit F12 when booting up and choose the SSD drive as your boot up drive.

There should not be any issues after this and everything should work the way it is. Before SSD. Do you have a direct download link for the windows setup drivers for Win 7 x64? Excellent post, thank you. Thank you, but the link you provided just provides a list of drivers. They do not make this easy to find. Tried this as suggested, but did not work for my approach of cloning my boot partition from the factory HDD to the SSD, removing HDD, and repair of the boot record with a win7 repair disk.

So, my SSD simply would not boot. I recently got a T with an SSD as the only drive. I wanted to put in a second SSD but was unable to configure it like that during the online ordering process. The Dell rep told me that it is not possible to put two SSD drives in. That sounded strange, but possible. Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts on it?

I am pretty sure you could get 2 SSD running together. I tried to change a lot of them but no way. Do you know what the problem is? Thanks for your response.

My SSD is working now. I followed your instruction by using Raid card driver an put it into USB. Can you tell me where you bought 3.

I tried couple 3. Any suggestions? After changing the setting I was able to get Win7 successfully installed. To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install bit and signed bit drivers. Installing an unsigned bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation. I am using the Load Driver option and I tried selecting the 32 bit as well as the 64 bit individually or all together.

But nada. Same error over and over and over again.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It only takes a minute to sign up. I bought a dell workstation for using with mysql and python. I then installed the OS on an ssd instead to speed things up. However, there seems to be a problem with perc and ssd, such that trim does not work and the ssd is much slower. Im not curious as to 'how to solve my problem', this question is strictly, what is the benefit of the PERC controller over directly connecting to the sata III.

It's your best option. TRIM is really not a factor with enterprise SSD setups, and there's a lot more detail than can be covered within the scope of this question. Sign up to join this community. My current "backup plan" is to run Macrium to image the disk onto a portable SSD, wipe the config, make a new array, then restore the image to the new array.

Join me to this group. Read these nextThank you for this post. A quick google search brought it up and explained the horrible writes we just experienced to a R turned NAS.

We left the in there Will be buying a to plop in shortly! Thank you indeed ScubaSteve, you and your silent partner Google make the world a better place. As a software person with no time for learning much about hardware yet with the responsibility for making purchases you've saved me from a mistake.

Although I think the fumes from all those burning H controllers may be making me a bit light headed Aaaah Dell. Reasonable prices - and that's it. I've recently been handling a purchase of gear from Dell for a fitout and although their pricing is good their sales staff are annoying as ever.

After requesting a quote with no indication I was ready to proceed I received twice daily phone calls for a fortnight.

Si issei fanfiction

Once a week? Twice a week? Twice a day? F off. Anyway, in the order was an R server. My contact "Harry" tried to McDonalds me and upsell me on parts here there and everywhere. But there's one part he didn't try to upsell me on that actually effing matters. If you're like me, you probably thought, great - it's got a hardware RAID controller.

Well here's the thing. This model of RAID controller has no cache. Yes - you read correctly. You are now going to be experiencing HDD performance in your server comparable to that of a HDD from the early to mid 90s. All because Dell has the nerve to sell a controller that simply shouldn't exist. This controller makes your drives perform as intended and adds a feature called CacheCade which lets you use an SSD as cache note - buy a 2RU server with 8 3.

Don't really know why they bothered with that model to be honest The reason I recommend the HP is because it comes in the proprietary card form factor so it won't eat up one of your very limited number of spare PCI Express slots.

Now - having said all that. The reason for purchasing the Dell server in the first place was that it was rack mountable and it includes a 3 year warranty.

That's all very well and good, but here's something for nothing. Dell and pretty much every other vendor suck to deal with. Poor language skills, annoying sales staff, screwed up deliveries.

If I was doing this all again, I'd build it myself. Simple as that. Cost wise it probably works out about the same for the hardware and realistically the extra money you pay for the three year warranty probably works out covering the small percentage of parts that may or may not pack it in within the next three years.

But you know what?I can't configure it in the raid. I get a foreign configuration error. I thought it was the drive so I pulled it out and formatted it but it made no difference. I can see the drive in the raid setup just fine. I just cant create an array with the bugger.

The issue you are having is likely due to the drive not being compatible. Although I believe this is the issue you can also update the firmware on the controller, as earlier firmware versions didn't include Non-Certified drives. Update and see if the Foreign can be cleared. Let me know what you see. TW Computers is an IT service provider. If it still says that there is a foreign config, you can clear foreign config in the bios. I thought I read that it was compliant with the Dell array.

I will update the firmware on the PERc and see what that gives me. I cant seem to find that part number on crucial's site or dells. Just curious, I am having a very similar problem which may or may not have to do with certified vs non-certified drives in RAID5. I am on an H controller with the original Did you update your firmware to I have had non-certified drives in the server for two years and not had any problems until recently.

But I thought I read somewhere that the firmware should be upgraded if using non-certified drives? I see there is a Dell rep replying on this thread, so maybe you can point me in the right direction? To continue this discussion, please ask a new question. DellFollowers - Follow Mentions Products.
